Charlie has spent 10 years specialising in shellwork features, for an impressive portfolio of private clients in London, throughout Britain & abroad. Most of his shellwork designs are bespoke & either form part of a garden design or are commissioned separately. He has recently produced two made-to-order outdoor/indoor pots.
Charlie’s designs often feature the symmetry and majestic repetition of shells juxtaposed with a wilder more naturalist aesthetic, combing rock and shell, using warm toned materials, perhaps harkening back to the sun dappled savannas and rocky seascapes of Kenya where he grew up. His use of shell or rock-covered relief is particularly unique to Charlie’s hand - building up these 3D elements by drawing on his formal training as a sculptor at the Florence Academy in Italy.
After training in the craft of grotto making under Belinda Eade, Charlie honed his technique and style over years, drawing on inspiration from the many shell grottoes & features he has visited worldwide. (Some have been added to his Journal!) Obsessing over the perfect mortar mix, he has tested it under varying seasonal weather conditions including frost & thaw to ensure the longevity of his work.
Overlapping into interiors, Charlie has also produced two made-to-order outdoor/indoor pots as well as bespoke features including walk-in shellhouses, grottoes, decorative walls, alcoves, bars and drinks spaces, fountains and water features.
His work has been featured in Financial Times, The Telegraph and House & Garden among other publications.
